Public Services Assistant / Evening & Weekend Supervisor

Public Services Assistant/ Evening Weekend Supervisor reports directly to the Public Services Librarian and is under the general supervision of the Director of Library Services. The Public Services Assistant / Evening & Weekend Supervisor is a full-time (40 hours), twelve (12) months position that provides library assistance to the administration, faculty, staff and students of Lee University and the Pentecostal Theological Seminary, maximizes the productive use of information resources and oversees student assistants. The Public Services Assistant / Evening & Weekend Supervisor also maintains the library’s social media accounts. The Public Services Assistant / Evening & Weekend Supervisor must be willing to work every other weekend, other assigned shifts and special events (as needed).

Education & Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited academic institution
  • Two (2) years’ experience working in a library setting or any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Experience with graphic design and/or ability to maintain the library’s social media accounts


  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Master’s degree from an accredited academic institution
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress classification system

Skill Requirements:

  • Strong organizational and decision making skills
  • Excellent customer service, communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and problem solving skills
  • Ability to supervise student assistants
  • Ability to work independently under minimum supervision in accordance with established procedures, but function as part of a team
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of computers, data processing software, email programs, spreadsheet design, and telephones
  • Excellent working knowledge of research techniques/methods, including various documentation styles (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.)
  • Ability to learn thoroughly the physical layout of the library and direct patrons to the requested/needed area of the facility
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment (copier, printer, etc.) and the ability to assist others in using the equipment as necessary
  • Thorough familiarity with library website and its contents
  • Considerable ability to pay attention to detail
  • Knowledge of paraprofessional library principles, methods, techniques and procedures (including the ability to maintain confidentiality regarding library patron records and other classified information)
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and remain calm in difficult situations
  • Willing to present a professional image and work ethic
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to learn Library of Congress classification system and library resources available for research

Essential Function:
The specific job functions of this position may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Answer reference questions in person, by telephone, by email or by instant message
  • Assist patrons in identifying, focusing and stating their desired research needs
  • Assist patrons in identifying, locating and accessing desired library materials
  • Instruct patrons in the use of catalogs, databases and other print and electronic resources
  • Assist patrons in requesting interlibrary loan materials
  • Assist patrons in using computers and software systems available in the library and refers to the university’s help desk as need
  • Provide patrons with directions within the library and on campus
  • Answer telephones and provide routine information
  • Oversee the full range of information services desk procedures
  • When opening and closing, secure cash at information service desk and determine building security
  • Train new student assistants
  • Supervise student assistants
  • Maintain student assistant work schedule
  • Respond to emergency situations with calmness while exercising sound judgment
  • Report concerns/problems to the Public Service Librarian and respective departments (as needed)
  • Enforce library policies and procedures during the evening and weekend shift
  • Prepare opening or closing report depending on shift
  • Assist with special projects
  • Maintain reserve collection
  • Maintain confidentiality of patron records.
  • Perform other services and duties as assigned
