Students Support Health & Fitness Campaign


College students in the Innovation and Social Media class at Lee University were given the opportunity to collaborate with the Bradley County Health Council on a collaboration to support the health and wellness of the citizens of Bradley County.

Dr. Luis C. Almeida, the professor who taught the Innovation and Social Media course at Lee, curated his class around their partnership with the Bradley County Health Council.

“This was an amazing opportunity for our students to work in a real world social media campaign, where they had the chance to display their talents,” said Almeida. “When we empower students to make decisions according to their talents with insightful supervision, wonderful things can happen.”

The class was developed in a way that gave the students hands-on opportunity to apply what they learned in the classroom and receive a better understanding of the analytics involved when working with a social media platform in the real world.

The specific campaign these students worked on was the Bradley Cleveland (BC) Champions — A Healthier Tennessee Community. The objective of the BC Champions is to increase awareness in the community about the importance of personal health. Lee students helped the BC Champions Facebook page by increasing Facebook followers by 180 percent as well as quadrupling reach and engagement to the public, according to Almeida.

“The initiative provides a vehicle for agencies and non-profits to collaborate toward creating a healthy community,” said Justin Thomas, University of Tennessee extension agent in Bradley County.

Lee’s students worked closely with the Bradley County Health Council every day on the initiative and analyzed its social media presence. Almeida shared that “feedback about the campaign from the Bradley County community was extremely positive.”

Two students from Almeida’s class presented the results of the campaign to the Healthier Tennessee Board last month in the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce. According to Almeida, the Healthier Tennessee Board was very impressed with the class’s campaign results and presentation.

“I think this initiative is an excellent way for the public to get educated on health and for parents to educate their kids on health,” said Julia Minucci, a Lee senior involved in the campaign’s production.

At Lee’s recent Homecoming, the students set up a booth where they actively promoted the BC Champions Facebook page. The Lee community helped with the success of this project by liking and sharing the page’s posts.

“Working with the Bradley County Health Council has been a tremendous experience,” said Preston Steger, a junior at Lee also involved in the campaign’s production. “This work has taught me about teamwork, leadership, and creative thinking.”
