Symphonic Band to Perform Sunday

Lee University Symphonic Band will perform under Dr. Mark Bailey, conductor and professor of music at Lee, on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center.

The ensemble will present an eclectic concert of band classics, which will include several selections from the worship music repertoire the band regularly presents in churches across the United States.

Three local churches will join Symphonic Band for the final numbers of the evening: the North Cleveland Crusader Choir directed by Nate Ridgeway, the Ministry Center Choir directed by Renee Talley, and the Mt. Olive Choir directed by Brian Shaw.

According to Bailey, the concert will focus on the Lee University Centennial, the school’s history with sponsoring churches, and the emphasis on instrumental music that has always been an important aspect of Lee.

The night’s concert will open with a special guest performance by The Chattanooga Home School Band, directed by Tina Holcombe.

Holcombe has conducted the band for the past 23 years, building a wonderful organization that serves students in the Chattanooga area, according to Bailey.

The Symphonic Band has performed at churches across the country and at conferences such as the Christian Instrumentalists and Directors Association National Conference and the Atlanta Instrumental Expo Conference, the largest instrumental church music conference in America. It has also performed at numerous music festivals, appeared on television and radio, headlined important university events, and toured 14 foreign different nations around the world.

The 2018 Lee University Symphonic Band consists of 56 musicians, several having participated in former all-state and all-regional bands, and has a reputation as an outstanding performance ensemble with superior musicianship.

The evening’s performance, emceed by former member of Lee’s Symphonic Band and Director of Lee’s Division of Adult Learning Dr. Joshua Black, is a free, non-ticketed event, open to the public.

The concert will be available for live stream viewing. For more information about Symphonic Band or Lee’s School of Music, contact (423) 614-8240 or music@leeuniversity.edu.
