The 18th annual 65 Roses 5K will take place during Great Strides 2020 Weekend to raise funds and awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Foundation. The race date will be announced soon.

The 5K is a certified 3.1 mile course that begins and ends at the Paul Conn Student Union on Lee’s campus and winds through the Cleveland Historic Districts and Main Street Cleveland. Dr. Bill Estes, dean of Lee University’s Helen DeVos College of Education, will serve as race director.

Similar to last year, the 65 Roses 5K and Great Strides walk will begin at the same time with registration opening at 7 a.m. and both events beginning promptly at 9 a.m. The cost to register for the race is $30, and all proceeds go to the CF Foundation.

“We are excited for another year of the 65 Roses 5K,” said Estes. “Two years ago the Great Strides Weekend crossed the one million dollar threshold for fundraising. Seeing the direct impact from our efforts has been both humbling and inspiring to keep on in our work. We believe this year’s walk and run will be the best yet.”

Awards will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female runners in 12 different age divisions in the 5K. According to Estes, this year’s swag will include a technical shirt for all runners, walkers, and volunteers; with a running beanie for all 5K finishers.

Chick-fil-A Chattanooga has signed on as the first Community Champion for the 5K and Great Strides walk. Ralph Buckner Funeral Home & Crematory continues as the lead race sponsor as it has done since the event’s inception. Other premier sponsors include First Horizon Bank, TriCon, Inc., Bank of Cleveland, Beaty Fabricating, Caldwell Paving & Grading, Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, Crawford’s Pharmacy, Don Ledford Automotive, Easy Auto, SouthEast Bank, and Paul and Darlia Conn. Kilometer sponsors include Ian Harper, CPA, Pinnacle Bank, Regions Bank, and Southern Heritage Bank. Community Sponsors are EquiTitle Inc, SmartBank, United Community Bank, and Wedgewood Accounting. Cleveland Police Department, Panera Bread, Sodexo, and Terra Running Co. are contributing in-kind event support. Cleveland Daily Banner, WCLE Mix 104.1 FM, and Edge Billboards are helping with the media awareness campaign.

CF is a chronic disease affecting the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is a nonprofit donor-supported organization dedicated to attacking cystic fibrosis from every angle. Its focus is to support the development of new drugs to fight the disease, improve the quality of life for those with CF, and ultimately to find a cure. In the last 30 years, the life expectancy of a child with CF has doubled, and research is happening daily to find a cure and perfect the drugs available to those living with CF.
