Lee University alumnus Aaron Wood, a physical education (PE) teacher at Hixson Elementary School, is creating fun workout videos for students staying home during the Covid-19 crisis.

“Just because school is closed doesn’t mean PE has to be cancelled,” Wood said in his first video, posted March 16.

Wood has been teaching PE at Hixson Elementary for seven years. After Hamilton County Schools announced that the system would remain closed through April 13, Wood’s wife and also a Lee alum, Marissa, suggested he create videos to help kids stay active.

“Regardless of where you live, I can be your PE teacher,” says Wood. “And the three things I always tell my students is: I want you to learn something new, I want you to exercise, and most importantly, I want you to have fun.”

Wood’s videos feature different routines each day, including dancing to high energy songs, practicing yoga in costume, doing cross fit training with toilet paper, and drumming with spatulas and pillows. To date, his videos have more than 140,000 views, collectively.

According to Wood, local news stations have been contacting him all week to find out more about him and the workouts. He has also heard from people in Canada, Greece, India, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, all enjoying his videos.

“It’s wild,” says Wood, “but I plan to keep doing it as long as it needs to be done.”

After earning his bachelor’s degree in health and wellness education from Lee University in 2013, Wood went on to get his master’s degree in educational leadership from Arkansas State University.
