    Dr. Lori West
    Associate Professor of Biology

Since joining the Natural Science and Mathematics faculty in fall 2006, Dr. Lori West has made it her goal to serve Lee students and the community through science education.

A native of east Tennessee, she received her bachelor’s degree from Maryville College in 1999 where she majored in biology and minored in chemistry. In 2004, she earned her doctorate from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in the Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology department. She went on to conduct post-doctoral research in the nutrition department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then returned to Maryville to teach in the Natural Sciences for a year as a visiting assistant professor before coming to Lee.

At Lee, West has taught courses such as Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, and Biotechnology. But she’s never been satisfied with just teaching her own students inside her classroom. West has coordinated the local Science Olympiad (a competition for middle and high school students) for the past several years, also helping Lee host a regional tournament for the competition. She is also a member of the Tennessee Science Olympiad Board of Directors, and has served as a science fair judge and science expert for local science competitions.

West’s mission is to serve science lovers of all ages, including local teachers. She was the program director for three recently funded Tennessee Higher Education Committee grants of almost $75,000 each. These grants funded MIB (Mathematics in Biotechnology), MIB 2.0 and E=MC2 (Elementary Mathematics and Science Connections), three programs where West and other Lee faculty recruited local high school or elementary school teachers for a summer workshop accompanied by follow-up training in the fall.

Currently, West is working with a local elementary school to form a collaboration where Lee students can serve as “science mentors” in the schools, helping young students develop and conduct science fair projects.

West also serves as a mentor for several different student research projects and is the chair of the poster committee. Student research poster presentations are held on campus each spring.

Lori and her husband Chris have three children, Adam, Jonathan, and Andrew.
