English major with literature and writing emphasis, French and history minor
Class of Fall 2019
Cleveland, Tennessee, native Makayla Jenkins knew Lee was the place for her after visiting with professors from the language and literature department on Lee Day. “I truly felt at home,” says Makayla. “From that moment, I knew that I had found the university I was meant to attend.”
Makayla serves as an officer for the English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta, and is a member of the history honor society, Phi Alpha Theta. She also works with preschoolers at her church, Westwood Baptist, and has served as a student worker in the Department of Language and Literature.
Makayla loves reading, language, and attending plays but overall her favorite thing to do is travel. She has been to over half of the 50 states, Canada, England, and France.
It was her cross cultural trip with the language and literature department that took her to England. “It was one of the most valuable experiences of my life,” says Makayla. “It was incredible to see the places, people, and literature I’ve studied come to life in a way that is only possible when visiting the place where their history was born.”
After graduation, Makayla plans to attend graduate school, get her doctorate, and eventually become a university professor.
