Exercise Science, Exercise Science Pre-Athletic Training, Sport Management, and Secondary Education. These comprehensive programs prepare students in applied health sciences, fitness, sports, and education. Students benefit from a variety of theoretical knowledge and practical experiences, equipping them for career fields in the following areas: athletic coaching; personal training; fitness management; injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation; athletic administration; sport marketing; event and facility management; as well as middle school and high school education. HESSE instructors are well-trained with years of practical experience in the field and in the classroom. Each major aligns with Lee University values, which is to provide integrative learning pathways that lead students to understand and commit to Christian faith and vocation through their academic pursuits.

Human Development degrees are offered with three separate emphases: Business and Deaf Studies. Each emphasis prepares students to work with children where teacher licensure is not required or for graduate work in the field.

The Business Emphasis includes courses in business, social sciences, and linguistics, providing groundwork especially for those planning a business or career-related to child development.

Other career opportunities that require an understanding of human development are also appropriate.

Capstone

The Capstone course is designed to help graduating students integrate their faith with the academic knowledge they have gained throughout their studies. It is regarded as the final reflection of the essential Core Values of Lee University.

Recognizing that interest in human development often goes beyond direct classroom teaching, the Helen DeVos College of Education offers several degrees that address these interests. These degrees concentrate on typical and atypical human development but also include specialty areas such as business, Asian studies, deaf studies, and special education. They are increasingly popular and offer an excellent foundation for entry into many professions and for the pursuit of graduate degrees in related fields.

Students can pursue undergraduate-level degrees in the following areas:

Exercise science prepares students for careers in fitness/wellness, health education and athletic training. In addition to major classes, Lee offers a variety of activity, sport, and lifetime fitness classes. Our faculty are passionate about developing relationships with students to guide and inform their experience. They are expert educators with not only academic credentials but also real world experience, from seasoned professional athletic trainers with at least fifteen years of clinical experience, to exercise science faculty with decades of teaching experience and certification in personal training and strength and conditioning. In all areas, our professors create opportunities for students to do hands-on projects in the community that bridge the classroom to real life - it’s simply a great way to learn.

The Graduate Studies in the Helen DeVos College of Education address both initial licensing and advanced degrees in our MAT and MEd programs.  Our Educational Specialist and Educational Doctorate programs are designed to provide expertise in advanced educational goals.  Grounded in a tradition of academic excellence, our outstanding faculty provide leadership principles and give our candidates the tools needed to be successful in their educational careers.  Teachers who have been hired by a school system but lack initial licensure (job-embedded) are welcomed into our MAT program.
