What kind of guy names all three of his sons after Alabama quarterbacks? One who really (really) loves sports. In this case, the guy is George Starr, the renowned voice of Lee University basketball for 31 years and all-around Lee athletics guru for more than 20 years.

Originally from Athens, Tennessee, George has spent most of his adult life covering East Tennessee sports. Starting as a sports editor at his local paper, he soon transitioned to a larger paper before going on to cover sports in Chattanooga. For a short while he was a managing editor, until 1997 when he was invited to join the Lee Athletic Office as sports information director. Since then, George has been faithfully overseeing all communications related to Lee’s athletic teams.

Well known for the speed and sheer volume of his work, George is often described by President Conn as “the hardest working person at Lee.” Before his retirement in June 2017, George covered seven NAIA World Series, eight NCCAA National Championships, four consecutive NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championships and three Gulf South Conference Championships. Yes, he also covered regular season games, too.

He is most comfortable hunkered down behind a keyboard in his dimly lit office. George is not much for the Twitter. And no need to ask if he’s seen Tom Brady’s recent Instagram post. He hasn’t. He just loves sports; an old-fashioned purest. At Lee, George is a star.
