Invitational Art Show to Open Tuesday

Lee University will hold its Fall Student Invitational Show featuring a variety of Lee students’ artistic works. The show will open with a reception on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 9:15 a.m.-10:15 a.m. in the Mayfield Gallery.

“I am so proud of the development of our students and the hard work they continue to exhibit,” said Victoria Phillips, visiting assistant professor of art. “I have taught almost all the students in the show at some point over the last 2 years. I have seen their growth firsthand, and I am honored to be able to provide a space to share their work with our students and surrounding communities.”

The students whose work will be on display include Wyatt Brooker, Kate Collins, Layne Condra, Alexa Davis, Aster (Abigail) Domer, Anna Evens, Brooklyn Fairchild, Chloe Gates, Elizabeth Kirby, Ashlyn Kirtner, Lindsay Lafave, Jordan Lenarz, Mariana Michalek, Anna Joy Nyberg, Sylvie Patty, Jamis Rose, and Adeline Smith.

Michalek, a graphic design major, will have a photograph on display, “Rock & Skate.”

“Art is a way of healing for me,” said Michalek. “All hurt experienced is put on a canvas and drawn out to express how I feel. When there are no words to express the hurt we go through, a picture is always there, because a picture says a thousand words. People change and life moves on, but the pages I have drawn full of my emotions and ideas stay forever.”

Rose, a studio art major, will have two oil paintings on display, “A Delightful and Delicious Delicacy” and “QUACK! QUACK! NOT THE KRAKEN!”

“Although my art has elevated levels of realism, I try to expand my creative process by incorporating surreal elements in every art piece,” said Rose. “Through painting, I have found freedom to express my humorous side that I struggled to find through graphite drawings.”

The exhibition will be on display through Monday, Nov. 11, in the Mayfield Gallery (previously the Mayfield Commons) located in the Mayfield Annex directly behind the Helen DeVos College of Education on 15th Street.

Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public.
