Lee University’s Presidential Concert Series will welcome the celebrated Irish quintet Goitse on Tuesday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Pangle Hall.

“Goitse is an exceptional addition to the Presidential Concert Series, and we are excited to bring their vibrant, award-winning sound to Lee University,” said Darlia Conn, director of the Presidential Concert Series. “Their ability to blend tradition with innovation will make for an unforgettable evening of music.”

Named Live Ireland’s “Traditional Group of the Year,” Chicago Irish American News’ “Group of the Year,” as well as winning the prestigious “Freiburger International Leiter 2016” award in Germany, Goitse has become a leader of the new generation of traditional Irish ensembles. Together, the quintet makes what Irish Music Magazine calls “music that is brimming with energy and creative zeal.”

Goitse has released six critically acclaimed recordings and maintains a year-round touring schedule that includes performances throughout Ireland, U.K., Germany, France, and the U.S. Their distinctive sound lies in the quality of their own compositions interspersed with age-old traditional tunes which make each performance unique.

Laying the foundations for Goitse’s music are World and All-Ireland Bodhrán champion Colm Phelan, along with Conal O’Kane, who is fast making a name for himself as one of the finest guitarists of his generation. The gripping rhythm section sets a powerful drive for the music while the sweet, charismatic voice of Áine Mc Geeney draws audiences into a song the way few performers can. Multi-instrumentalist Alan Reid features mainly on banjo and bouzouki, drawing from an extensive knowledge of archival collections of Irish which enriches the bands repertoire. Daniel Collins, an All-Ireland champion and multi-instrumentalist, is known for his intricate bass work on the accordion.

Tickets for this performance are $15 for adults and $5 for students, seniors, and children. They are available for purchase on eventbrite.com, at the Lee University Box Office in the Dixon Center, or by contacting (423) 614-8343, between 3-6 p.m., starting February 25.

Designated parking will be available for the event.

Additional funding for this concert was generously provided by the Tennessee Arts Commission.
