Local High Schools Participate in Quiz Bowl
Constitution Quiz Bowl, bringing to campus four local high schools in
recognition of Constitution Day. The quiz bowl was sponsored by Lee’s
chapter of the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honors Society.
Participating
high schools in the quiz bowl included two teams from Bradley County,
Walker Valley, Tennessee Christian Preparatory School, and one team from
Cleveland High School. Each high school team participated in multiple
quiz rounds with questions pulled from the U.S. Constitution, the
Amendments, and the Federalists’ papers.
“This event is a great
opportunity to foster relationships with local high schools,” said John
Griffis, president of Pi Sigma Alpha at Lee. “We are able to show [high
school students] what Lee has to offer in academics and amenities while
hosting a competition that engenders learning and civic responsibility.
We are excited about growing this event even more next year.”
In
the weeks leading up to the quiz bowl, the political science department
recruited Lee students to help volunteer with the planning and execution
of the event.
said, “The quiz bowl is an excellent opportunity for both Lee and the
local community. Not only are we able to recognize and reward academic
excellence among local high schools, but we are able to get students to
study the founding documents that undergird our nation.”
For the
final round, Walker Valley’s all-girl team faced off against Cleveland’s
team of boys. The Walker Valley girls emerged victorious with a 70-50
point win over Cleveland.
Recognition of Constitution Day on
Sept. 17, the signing date of the U.S. Constitution in 1787, is
mandatory for all educational institutions to receive federal funds from
the U.S. Department of Education.
