String Theory at the Hunter Thursday

News

The Hunter Museum of American Art and Lee University present the second String Theory concert of the season on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hunter.

String Theory is a series of chamber music concerts established in 2009 by internationally acclaimed pianist, artistic director and Lee faculty member, Gloria Chien. The collaboration offers exceptional classical music to the community in the artistic setting of the museum.

The one hour performance will feature renowned musicians Cho-Liang Lin on violin, William Vermeulen on horn and Gloria Chien on piano, performing works by DiLorenzo, Ravel and Brahms.

Violinist Cho-Liang Lin, praised for the eloquence of his playing and for the superb musicianship of his performances, boasts an international concert career spanning 30 years. Lin’s extensive discography includes recordings for Sony Classical, Decca, Ondine, Naxos and BIS. His albums have won such awards as Gramophone’s Record of the Year, as well as two Grammy Award nominations. The Los Angeles Times said of “Lin’s relaxed virtuosity and pointed musicality — the Taiwanese American violinist always seems to explore the depths of the music he plays.”

In Tune magazine calls William VerMeulen’s horn playing, “miraculous!….clearly one of today’s superstars of the international brass scene.” VerMeulen received his training from Dale Clevenger at Northwestern University and at the Interlochen Arts Academy. He has participated as a performer and on faculty with numerous music festivals and chamber music presenters. VerMeulen has been Principal Horn of the Houston Symphony since 1990.

Dr. Gloria Chien has been selected by the Boston Globe as “one of the Superior Pianists of the year, who appears to excel in everything.” She made her orchestral debut at the age of 16 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and has since performed at such festivals as Verbier Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, and Music@Menlo, where she was appointed the Chamber Music Institute Director since 2001. Chien has been the resident pianist with the Chameleon Arts Ensemble of Boston since 2000.

Chien completed her doctorate, master’s and undergraduate degrees at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

Chamber performances will begin at 6:30 p.m. preceded by a discussion led by Dr. Thomas Wolf, the Artistic Director for Bay Chamber Concerts in Maine, and Hunter Museum Chief Curator Ellen Simak.

Tickets for the individual event are $25, $20 for museum members. Season tickets for members and donors are $120 each; season tickets for non-members are $150 each, available for purchase online at Hunter Museum.
