Lee University recently inducted 137 students into its chapter of the National Society for Leadership and Success (NSLS). NSLS is dedicated to providing a leadership program that helps students achieve personal and career growth and empowers them to make a positive impact in their communities.

“NSLS has proven to be a transformative opportunity for our student leaders to practice and hone their leadership skills,” said Alex Staup, director of student engagement at Lee. “We are proud of all the students who have committed to growth and development through NSLS, but most of all we cannot wait to see how they use these tools to enact meaningful change in all areas of their lives.”

Students who were inducted must have at least a 2.8 GPA and sophomore or junior status by credit hour. They then complete a series of induction steps, including orientation, leadership training day, leadership broadcasts, and Success Networking Teams.

As part of the society, students have access to internships, scholarships, job boards, networking events, and opportunities to develop interpersonal and career skills. Lee’s chapter now has over 300 members. Will McCuistion, a success coach at Lee; Sarah Sajja, secretary for student engagement; and Staup serve as Lee’s chapter advisors.

“I initially joined NSLS because my father asked me to, thinking that it would grow my leadership skills and be fun,” said Emma Wood, sophomore English writing major with a minor in journalism. “I cannot imagine what would have happened if I had not joined; I had the opportunity to lead a Success Networking Team and really enjoyed the connections I made within the club as well as the skills I have obtained just by attending meetings.”

At the induction, Vice President for Student Development Dr. Mike Hayes offered a keynote address, where he was presented with the Glass Flame Award. This award has historically been given to a staff member who has gone above and beyond in their care for students.

Casey Cole, lecturer in theology, received the Impact Award. This award recognizes individuals who embody the mission of the NSLS and demonstrate leadership qualities and integrity in a personal and professional capacity. Individuals honored with the Impact Award have played an integral role in fostering opportunities for growth and development among students.

A reception followed the ceremony.
