Lee University’s Symphonic Band will present its spring concert on Tuesday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center, under the direction of Dr. Mark Bailey, professor of music.

The program will feature classic music from the concert band repertoire such as Sousa, Curnow, and Reed, as well as worship selections that feature all of the Symphonic Band’s musicians.

“The Symphonic Band is excited to perform our spring worship concert that we have worked on since returning to class in January,” said Bailey. “Because of the need to rehearse and perform utilizing CDC guidelines, it has been a challenging semester. We have been committed to keeping the members of the ensemble safe, while still producing music that represents excellence in musicianship as well as sincere and heartfelt worship that the ensemble has come to be known for.”

The Lee Symphonic Band has developed a reputation as an outstanding performance ensemble that combines superior musicianship with a true sensitivity to the use of music as a vehicle to minister the gospel of Jesus Christ. The ensemble has given numerous students in the past 30 years the opportunity to utilize their talents in playing musical instruments to the glory of God.

According to Bailey, several former members are now leading ministers of worship in churches across the United States and are also successful high school and/or middle school band directors, as well as professional musicians.

The 2021 Symphonic Band is made up of 44 musicians divided into winds, percussion, rhythm, and a vocal ensemble. Several of these students are former all-state and/or all-regional band participants in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee. Most of the students in this ensemble have received academic scholarship awards for excellence in the classroom and excellence in performance on their various instruments.

Bailey has conducted Symphonic Band for the past 30 years. He also teaches undergraduate and graduate course work in music education, music theory, and conducting.

“We hope everyone will be able to listen to these student musicians as they use their musical expertise to honor and glorify God and sense the presence of the Holy Spirit, as the intent of the ensemble is to magnify Christ both in our talents, attitudes, lifestyles, and musical performance,” said Bailey.

The concert is free and open to the public, though due to limited seating, tickets will be required. It will also be livestreamed on Lee’s website for those unable to attend in person and can be viewed at https://leeu.live.
