Lee University’s Symphonic Band will perform its first concert of the spring semester on Tuesday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center, under the direction of Dr. Mark Bailey.

The program will feature works such as “God of Our Fathers” by Claude T. Smith, “Alleluia” by Samuel Hazo, and “From Whom All Blessings Flow” based on the doxology, along with other wind band works.

The 2019 Symphonic Band is made up of 45 musicians representing 16 different majors at Lee. Several of these students are former all-state and/or all-regional band participants in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee. Most of the students in this ensemble have received academic scholarship awards for excellence in the classroom and excellence in performance on their various instruments.

In November 2019, the band celebrated its 30th anniversary with Bailey as its conductor. According to Bailey, alumni from the ensemble are some of the leading high school and middle school band directors in Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama and other parts of the nation, as well as leading worship pastors and other professional music careers.

Bailey has conducted Symphonic Band for the past 31 years. He also teaches undergraduate and graduate course work in music education and music theory and is a sought after clinician at both schools and churches across America.

“The Symphonic Band has developed a reputation as an outstanding performance ensemble that combines superior musicianship with a true sensitivity to the use of music as a vehicle to minister the gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Bailey.

The Lee University Symphonic Band is a premier ministry instrumental performance ensemble. The group has performed at leading churches across America, as well as at national seminars and conferences, numerous concert festivals, appearances on television and radio, important university events, and concert tours in 15 foreign countries. The band was the first collegiate band in America to perform in the nation of Jordan, and in 2011, it was the first U.S. concert band to perform in the nation of Cuba since 1958.

This event is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public.
